Admissions

These are the requirements for the online program

The admission process for the MSN – Nursing Administration online is simple and streamlined to help you get started right away. Please review the admission guidelines carefully.

Admission Requirements:

  • BSN degree from an accredited nursing program
  • RN license current and unencumbered
  • Resume or CV

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for admission to the MSN – Nursing Administration online degree program:

  • BSN from a regionally accredited university and a nursing program that is accredited by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the NLN Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)
  • Submission of Resume or CV
  • Current unencumbered RN license
    • If a student is permitted to meet course clinical requirements in a state other than Alabama, the student must be licensed in that state. Students will not be allowed to continue in the track if any license is placed on probation, suspended, or revoked. Licensure must be maintained throughout the program.
  • 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale in all baccalaureate coursework or on the last 60 semester hours of baccalaureate coursework completed
  • If GPA is between 2.5 and 3.0, student will need a minimum score on MAT of (410) or GRE (150/ 150/3)
  • Other institutional documents as provided

Students must also submit the following documents:

  • Criminal background check and drug testing
  • Physical/health exam
  • Immunization records for Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap); hepatitis B; varicella; MMR; and influenza
  • Evidence of a PPD skin test, a chest X-ray, or a QuantiFERON-TB Gold blood test
  • CPR or ACLS certification
  • Student consent forms and policies
  • Cultural Diversity, OSHA, and HIPAA certifications

Discover the degree plan for our online MSN – Nursing Administration program

The MSN – Nursing Administration online program includes 10 nursing courses totaling 30 credit hours. Graduates will have 225 cumulative clinical hours upon completing the program. These hours can help students move on to pursue their DNP online at UAH.

Complete your coursework on a full-time or part-time basis with 7-week courses (as well as three 15-week courses NUR 634, NUR 632, NUR 602 – these courses will be 10 weeks during summer terms). Full-time students can take two courses at a time with 39 hours per week of nursing courses. Part-time students will take 19 hours per week of nursing courses.

Fixed first course. This course focuses on the Nurse Administrator's relationships and roles in a variety of healthcare systems. Theories of management and organization are analyzed from the perspective of structure, communication, dynamics, trends, and key management, responsibilities, and functions in healthcare delivery systems.

This course focuses on the role of the nurse leader in resource allocation and management in healthcare systems and related organizations. Content related to human resource management includes workforce development, the healthcare workforce, recruitment, selection, retention, development, and labor relations.

This course includes discussion of philosophical and theoretical bases of nursing research and the application of research findings to practice, as well as the research process, from development of a research problem through discussion of research findings. This course is 15 weeks in spring and fall or 10 weeks when taken over summer term,

This course focuses on economic and financial implications for nurse administrators with emphasis on executive level budget management and business planning skills. The course is designed to assist nurse administrators in gaining conceptual knowledge regarding budgeting in health systems and policy factors impacting cost, quality, and access to healthcare. This course is 15 weeks in spring and fall or 10 weeks when taken over summer term,

This course focuses on information system concepts and technologies used in the structuring and processing of nursing information to arrive at clinical decision-making for healthcare. Analysis of information systems in clinical management, administration, education, and research will be completed. Students will explore capabilities, benefits, barriers, and related information and technologies comprising current state of informatics design and use in health and nursing related systems. Emphasis is placed on strategies, issues and technologies of information collection, analysis and communication.

The focus of this course is to explore the structure and complexity of the U.S. healthcare system. Content will include underlying values, major historical developments, reimbursement methods, stakeholders, and issues driving reform.

The focus of this course is to prepare Nursing Administration graduate students to comprehend and actively engage in organization strategic planning. Emphasis is on the development of organization blueprints, tracking current trends, forecasting, and innovative strategies in healthcare to achieve an organization’s mission and vision, thus remaining competitive in the industry. Note: 3 credit hour course: 2 didactic and 1 clinical. 45 clinical hours.

This course focuses on the quality, safety, and risk management concepts for nurse leaders. Content includes the use of quality tools and use of data to evaluate and promote quality outcomes. Note: 3 credit hour course: 2 didactic and 1 clinical. 45 clinical hours. Project around quality and safety.

This course focuses on concepts in health assessment and health promotion for individuals and populations. The course is designed for nurses preparing for leadership roles in healthcare organizations.
Duration: 15 weeks

Fixed final course. This is the culminating course that provides opportunities to synthesize leadership learning, administrative theory, and operational skills in budgeting and finance, and resource management. This knowledge is applied through the identified nurse executive competencies in selected healthcare related organizations. Course objectives reflect the AONE competencies and QSEN standards. Note: 135 clinical hours. Needs preceptor and affiliation agreement – demonstrate practice in an administrative nursing experience (indirect patient contact) that is beneficial to the organization under a mentor. This course is 15 weeks in spring and fall or 10 weeks when taken over summer term,
