There are a number of reasons that RNs with associate degrees or nursing diplomas want to get their BSNs.

For one, more nurse employers than ever either require or strongly prefer their nurses to have a BSN. We’re in an incredible age of advancements in medical care, with new technologies vital to improved care. A more educated healthcare team, with nurses at the center of that equation, is increasingly a necessity.

Fortunately for today’s nurses, healthcare facilities are willing to compensate nurses with more education. RN positions that call for BSN degrees generally offer more money to candidates than ones only calling for those with an associate degree in nursing.

And the extra education of the BSN prepares nurses for both the day-to-day unpredictability of patient care and the expanding range of roles for nurses in today’s healthcare landscape.

Too Busy to Earn a BSN?

But many of those who are already working as nurses feel they are too busy to commit to multiple years of additional school. If a program was only, say, 12 months, it might be conceivable for an ADN- or diploma-prepared nurse to take it on. But if it were to stretch out over multiple years, it might be deemed to be too much.

That’s one of the main issues The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) addresses with its online RN to BSN program; candidates can obtain their BSN within 12 months of enrollment. The program is geared toward nurses who are already working in hospitals or other healthcare facilities. It is designed to help nurses earn their degrees efficiently.

The seven-week courses are all taught online. That focused approach contrasts with a traditional 15- or 16-week course, which can feel overly long for a nurse juggling school, work and family life.

Quality

Just because you can finish these courses faster doesn’t mean they’re inferior classes when compared to their on-campus counterparts. UAH prides itself on offering a CCNE-accredited curriculum, emphasizing research and evidence-based practice.

The courses are taught by an accessible and supportive faculty, experienced in teaching working nurses in an online setting. Our faculty members understand both the challenges and the advantages of an online RN to BSN program. They are there to help you navigate the courses and reach your ultimate goal.

Affordability

The program’s nursing courses, for the entire 12-month program, are just $12,200. Students who need corequisite classes can take them in conjunction with nursing classes, which makes it possible for them to finish in the 12-month time frame.

And, because UAH offers six starting dates each year, nurses who want to take the next step in their careers and pursue a BSN can begin within weeks of making that important, transformative decision.
